National Fire Service College upgradation on cards

The Union Home Ministry has drawn up an ambitious plan of Rs 205 crore to upgrade the National Fire Service College here, the only institution of its kind in Asia, which has produced scores of fire fighting officers from various parts of the country and abroad, College sources said.

Established at Rampur in Uttar Pradesh way back in 1956, the College came into existence following a Central government Fire Expert Committee recommendation. It was later shifted to Nagpur. Now the Ministry has entrusted the job of upgradation
including infrastructure facilities and a new campus to the Central Public Works Department (CPWD).

The new campus is being developed on 43.35 acres of land in Rajnagar in western part of city and another piece of land measuring 14.61 acres near Vishweshariya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) in Bajaj Nagar, College sources told PTI.

The construction is likely to commence from next month since all the formalities including plan sanction have been completed. It is running 31 different courses with a strength of 1450 trainees.

The College provides courses like Bachelor of Engineering (BE) in Fire Service, Industrial Fire, Hydrocarbons Fire, Advance Rescue, Disaster Prevention and Management Communication, Airport Fire Safety, Mine Fire Safety, Forest Fire Safety, Offshore Fire Safety, Station Officers courses.

So far the College has provided training to over 15,400 trainees including 71 from foreign countries. It has earned appreciation for conducting courses in Station Officers, Breathing Apparatus, Hydraulic Platform, Automobile Maintenance, General Fire Prevention and basic course in Civil Defence.

Apart from freshers, most of the state and central government departments and public sector undertaking send their Fire officers for training and mandatory refresher and orientation courses, sources added.
