An assessment tool with a difference

Perhaps the first engineering online exam in the country, the Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test (BITSAT 2011) is expected to be announced by the end of this year. For BITS Pilani, candidates are required to have a minimum aggregate of 80 per cent in physics, chemistry and mathematics in Class XII with at least 60 per cent marks in each of the subjects and should have adequate proficiency in English. BITSAT is a Computer Based Online Test which usually lasts for a duration of three hours and is offered over a period of time so that the candidate can choose the centre, the day and time of his/her convenience to take the test.

The test (2010) has objective type (multiple choice) questions only. It usually consists of maths, physics, chemistry, logical reasoning and general awareness.

BITSAT is held on different days for over a month. Students have to book a time slot while filling the application form. The questions for the test are selected at random from a large question bank.

Different candidates will get different question sets, but of the same difficulty level and content. Logical application learnt at the intermediate level is considered sufficient for the test. The score is made available to the candidate immediately after the test.

The questions are generally so designed that a good student will be able to answer 150 questions in 180 minutes. The extra questions (a maximum of 12) gives a chance to highly meritorious candidates to score higher. However, candidates should keep in mind that there is negative marking for wrong answers. The BITSAT test is generally conducted on the basis of the NCERT syllabus for Classe XI and XII.
