Kanchi Sankaracharya Jayendra Saraswathi today opposed allowing foreign universities in the country, saying the move would spell doom to Indian way of thinking and culture.
"The entry of foreign universities will spell doom to our way of thinking and culture and swamp our campuses with alien values," he said at a college function in nearby Sriperumpudur.
It would be hard to undo the damage once they were permitted, he said adding Indian universities could instead go in for tie-ups and MoUs with overseas institutions to supplement or upgrade the education content here.
He said the Sankara institutions impart knowledge of Sanskrit and moral sciences every day. This was one reason why he opposes entry of foreign universities which, he said, would "block the way of our own system of education".
