Ranchi is all set to house India’s first central sports university, according to a plan made by the Central government and the Jharkhand state government. The facilities and the stadiums, created for the 34th National Games to be held in December, will be utilised for this purpose.
A detailed project report for the conversion and feasibility of the National Games facilities into a sports university has been submitted by the Central University of Jharkhand (CUJ) to the Human Resource Development (HRD) Ministry. The plan also includes opening up of Kendriya Vidyalayas near the proposed sports university in order to build greater linkages with schools. This would help in identifying talented students and provide them training from a young age.
According to the proposal, the games facilities will be incorporated into institutes that will be a part of the CUJ. The institutes will then, over the course of time, become a part of one single university. The sports varsity will have an academic structure that will combine subjects such as sports management, sports medicine, sports psychology along with the sports themselves.
