In a bid to strengthen its presence in West Bengal and in line with the commitment to provide quality education in the eastern region, IBS Kolkata announced that it has acquired five acres of land for its own campus.
The campus will be located eight kilometres from Science City on the Basanti Highway, towards Bantala. With this acquisition, IBS Kolkata will be shifted from its present location at Salt Lake Sector V to its new campus with the completion of construction.
IBS targets to complete the first phase of 50,000 square feet by 2012. The new campus will conform to the AICTE guidelines. The campus would, in addition to the regular facilities required for B-Schools, include an auditorium, cafeteria, sports facilities, complete Wi-Fi-enabled campus, student lounge, soft skills lab, a medical centre for emergencies and a well-stocked library among others.
“In the first phase, we plan to invest around Rs 25 crore. Investments will increase as the campus approaches its second and third phase. The new campus, which will conform to the AICTE guidelines will be in line with our strategy of building our own campus at all locations where IBS is present. Over a longer period of time we may look towards coming up with a university of our own in Kolkata if possible and will request support from the State government. This move is in line with our strategy of strengthening our presence in the Eastern region of the country where we already have a formidable presence with universities coming up in Bhubaneswar (Odisha), Sikkim, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Assam to name a few. The campus will give us the flexibility to meet the new accreditation and certification norms,” said Ashim Ghosh, Director, IBS Kolkata.
“We have always felt the need for a new campus. A rented campus not only becomes expensive in the long run due to its recurring costs, it also does not have the flexibility to expand as we introduce new courses. Our own campus can be evolved to suit the needs of our students. It will also give us the opportunity to introduce new courses and disciplines from time to time,” said Ghosh.
He also added that this acquisition has given IBS the opportunity to build a campus at a lush green locale, away from the bustle and pollution of the city center. “I am sure the students will welcome this change. To sum it up, the new campus would be able to deliver a better quality of campus life to the students,” Ghosh said.
