Pan-IIT 2010 conclave from October 29

President Pratibha Patil will inaugurate the annual pan-IIT 2010 conclave being held from October 29 to 31 in Greater Noida.

The conclave, which began in 2004, has come to be associated with some of the high-profile business and social conclave of similar dimensions, bringing IITians from across the globe to evolve country-specific development initiatives.

"The conclave is expected to draw an attendance of more than 5000 IITians with an aim to utilise the platform to deliberate and bring forward a multi-dimensional and holistic approach for sustainable transformation to happen and create our new India," said Vijay Thadani, one of the IITians.

Former US President Bill Clinton had addressed the conclave in that country last year.

Talking to reporters today, Thadani said transforming the socio-economic landscape of the country is their core vision.

Some of the initiatives launched by them like the 'reach for India' programme for grooming rural youths with various skill sets have been well received. It has received Rs 90 crore from NABARD.

They also intend to start a rural business hub in Yavatmal district of Maharashtra, a cotton growing district which has witnessed a high suicide rate among farmers due to crop failure.

"Our intention is to bring a change in the area by helping farmers get a good return of their produce through value addition," said Pradeep Gupta, another IITian.

The plan is to utilise a new technology developed by an IITian and set up a unit there which will add value to the cotton while it is being processed into yarns. The plant can also lead to the opening of ancillary units in the area, he said. However, the plan is still at the drawing board stage.
Indo-US collaboration for engineering education is another initiative of the pan-IIT group which aims to upgrade quality of engineering education in the country.
