14,000 engineering seats remain vacant in Karnataka

As the final round of counseling engineering colleges in Karnataka ends for this year, it has been found that an alarming number of 8,691 seats in the private quota have been left vacant. Also, around 5,000 seats in the common entrance test government quota are still lying unfilled.

The government had announced earlier this week that a special counseling round will be held for students who have cleared their pre-university courses in the supplementary chance.

Even last year, the number of seats that had been left vacant in engineering colleges were 11,300. Even though there was a dip in the demand of seats in engineering colleges, around 3,500 more seats were added to them last year.

There are 15,036 seats in the private quota, out of which 8,961 seats have been left untaken. In the government quota, seats are available at subsidized fees. Even then, 5,000 seats from the 30,000 seats have remained vacant.

The issue of the seats remaining vacant had been raised by several private colleges last year as almost 50 percent seats in most colleges were left untaken.

It has been alleged that the reason behind the large number of seats remaining vacant are the numerous engineering colleges that have been sanctioned in the state.
