AICTE allows 18 new institutions to offer PG courses in business

Chennai: The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has granted approval to the managements of 18 institutions to offer Masters in Business Administration from the new academic year (2009-10).

AICTE has sanctioned three institutions which will offer Masterâ€™s in Computer Applications (MCA) and two pharmacy colleges. â€œThe self-financing MBA colleges will come up in Coimbatore, Madurai, Trichy, Salem, Nagapattinam, Namakkal, Erode, Thanjavur, Villupuram, Perambalur and Pudukkottai.

Nearly 161 self-financing engineering and arts and science colleges in Tamil Nadu offer the MBA programme. While no government college offers MBA, a lone government-aided institution has 180 seats in MBA. 'Last year, 178 colleges had admitted 11,445 students in the MBA programme, while the sanctioned student intake in these institutions was 12,150,'an official at the directorate of technical education (DoTE) told The Times of India.

Incidentally, this year nearly 95,000 aspirants had applied for the Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test to be conducted by Anna University (Chennai) later this month. The figure is 25,000 more than the previous year. Appearing in the TANCET is a mandatory requirement for admission into MBA, MCA, ME/M.Tech in the state.

The TANCET applications showed that nearly 55,000 candidates have applied for the MBA entrance test. Last year only 35,000 applications were received from MBA aspirants. In contrast, the number of applications for the MCA entrance test dropped from 25,000 last year to 20,000 this year, since the software and Information Technology industry are in the midst of a slowdown.
