The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) council, which is the final decision making body for IITs in the country, has taken a tough stand over the attendance of the Board of Governors (BoG). This stand was taken following decades of a lenient attendance policy for the BoG. The BoG consists of academic experts and industrialists all over the country who are involved in the decision making over functioning of the IITs.
The council has now declared that any board member who does not attend three consecutive meetings will be shown the door. The council also added that the government officials will not be a part of the board anymore. Also, the members of the BoG will be nominated by the institutes and appointed by the IIT council which is headed by Kapil Sibal, Union Minister for Human Resource Development.
This move has been welcomed by directors of all the IITs in the country and they have said that this decision will help in ensuring that there will be fewer government officials and more practitioners and local experts in the new BoGs.
