A Delhi High Court verdict provided relief to over 100 disgruntled students of the Indraprastha University. The Court has allowed their petition against being denied promotion to the next academic year under the University’s new rules. It has directed the University to promote the students.
The management had amended the criteria for promotion last year and it was said to be applicable to the batches of 2009-10 and upwards. The 107 students, who had come together from various colleges, had alleged that this move was not communicated to them or to the colleges under the University. Counsel Geeta Luthra, assisted by Sanjeev Sahay, while appearing for the students contended that the University’s changed criteria was arbitrary and illegal.
Earlier, the students had the liberty to carry over all papers in which they had failed to the next year and the only criterion was that they have to ensure minimum points at the time of completion of final year. However, as per the amended rules, a student will be promoted to the next academic year only if he/she secures 50 percent of the total credit and 90 percent of the total credit of all previous academic years. The failed students will be declared to have taken academic breaks to reappear in such exams and only two academic breaks were permitted for a student.
