Following Delhi  and Hyderabad, British Council launched its English Language teaching centre in Kolkata on September 11. M K Narayanan, the governor of West Bengal made the formal announcement.

Ruth Gee, regional director, India and Sri Lanka, British Council division, British High Commission, making the inaugural address said, “Language lies at the heart of culture, as indeed we can say about other things we do around art and education. I hope you’ll see this as part of a broader offering.”

This was followed by a brief but captivating flute performance by British flautist Kate Grace. M K Narayanan, called on to share his thoughts, said, “ I now realize how a tiny island conquered the entire world. The real reason why I agreed to come for the launch was to repay my gratitude to BCL for my formative years. Today’s endeavour of teaching English English is a worthwhile endeavour. India and UK are two countries joined by a common language unlike UK and US, which are divided by a common language. Through such endeavours, the highly talented pool of the country can flower and reach their maximum glory.”

The teaching centre which is located in a new building within the premises of Mahadevi Birla Girls Higher Secondary school will offer language courses for professional and personal development that are specially tailored to the needs of Indian learners.
