Sudhir Kumar, a scientist working in the biotechnology laboratory of the International Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), Pune has set up a new school for the poor based on Rancho’s school in the movie ‘3 Idiots.’ It aims to instill scientific knowledge in the students through games and interactive workshops. The school is located in the village of Mirzapur Chand in Bihar’s Begusarai district, about 110 kms from Patna.
The school will provide education free of cost to the poor children. It has a staggered fee structure and the fees will depend on the economic group a particular child belongs to. "Education will be free for children belonging to families having no farm land or those of laborers, while kids of well-off parents such as landowners, businessmen, transport contractors, builders, government and private employees having regular income will be charged a monthly fee ranging from Rs. 50 to Rs. 100, " said Sunil Kumar, principal of the school.
The classrooms will have state of the art teaching aids like projector screens, computers, internet and all other modern facilities and the children will be encouraged to participate in different activities such as art, music, dance and theatre. The school has an intake capacity of 50-100 students which would be gradually increased with time depending on the availability of teachers and staff.
The school will be financially supported by an eminent panel of scientists besides international researchers who are supporting the effort. They will also conduct regular workshops in the school.
