University of Madras Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam will hold a meeting with associations of college teachers on Thursday to ensure timely conduct of exams and publication of results.
The interaction has been necessitated as only 40 per cent of teachers turned up for valuation in April during vacation and the university managed to publish the results on time with great difficulty.
“The meeting is to understand the problems faced by teachers and seek their support,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said.
K. Ganesan, Principal Secretary, Higher Education, in a meeting with controllers of examination of all universities, had asked the authorities to conduct exams on time and publish results without delay.
Valuation has been made mandatory, but, unless the universities have the cooperation of faculty of colleges for supervision and valuation, sticking to the schedule will be difficult, officials said.
At the time of valuation last November, the Director of Collegiate Education had declared a holiday for colleges and 95 per cent of the teachers turned up for valuation and the university was able to publish results on time, the officials noted.
The Institute of Distance Education (IDE), University of Madras, has come up with a single-window system to enable students from 1984 to 2006 to obtain their degree or diploma certificates.
“The IDE has given away 5,000 certificates. There are 10,000 more pending,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said. The list of candidates from the period would be uploaded on the institute's website www.ideunom.ac.in by September 23. Two special counters would function from September 24. The major problem was that the students lost the fee receipt. Students with the receipt can walk in with their ID card, course completion certificate or transfer certificate. Those who had lost the receipt should bring a DD for Rs.300 in the name of Director, IDE, University of Madras. Students can also apply through post till the end of this year by attaching a self-addressed envelope to the IDE.
