The Indian Institute of Technology Madras will present Shaastra 2010 from September 29 to October 3, 2010. The institute's annual technical fest, with over Rs. 15 lakh worth prize money, 60 different events ranging across the engineering spectrum and three professional shows, Shaastra seems to offer a lot of promise.
The Video Conference Lecture Series at Shaastra, kicks-off with a talk by Lyn Evans, project head of the CERN-based Large Hadron Collider.
Dr. Evans would be at IIT Madras on September 3 as part of the pre-Shaastra festivities. Other pre-Shaastra festivities include ‘Shaastra Sampark' — an effort to take Shaastra to the students in Pune and Bangalore.
The IIT-M Symposium on the theme of ‘Rural Education in India' will look at one of the basic and biggest challenges — Education for All.
In addition, Shaastra will play host to The Al Gore Sustainable Technology Venture Competition (AGSTVC), the brainchild of Oopali Operajita, CEO, Cicero, a transnational advisory.
AGSTVC is a student-led business plan competition, which provides mentoring for, and exposure to, the development of sustainable technology ventures from around the world, to combat climate change and fortify energy security.
Environmental concerns would form the backbone of Industry Defined Problem (IDP), with the challenge presented to this year's participants being to find out the least polluting fuel for automobiles.
IDP wishes to stretch thinking beyond one's boundaries and is a multi-disciplinary and multi-faceted take on issues faced by the industry.
Robotics in Shaastra 2010 comprises three major competitions.
The event also goes international with the online programming contest, where participants from across the globe use all use their algorithmic abilities to design a programme that can produce the required result.
A global event, the OPC has seen winners from abroad in the past.
Another highlight at Shaastra 2010 will be the three professional shows which intend to bring technology and entertainment together. The events planned under this category are Shaastra Nights, which have witnessed Laser Shows in the past; the Air Show, back on popular demand, and The RC Car Show.
