Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon
The Management Develop-ment Institute in Gurgaon has the distinction of being the first internationally accredited Indian B-school. In 2006, its graduate level programmes were accredited by AMBA, (Association of MBAs) UK. Counted among India’s top five B-schools, MDI integrates knowledge, research, industry experience and international exposure to offer comprehensive management programmes.
Main programmes: Full-time residential Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM), Full-time residential Post Graduate Programme in Human Resources (PGP-HR), Post Graduate Programme in International Management (PGP-IM)
Admission procedure: The admission process involves two stages. In the first stage, students are shortlisted on the basis of their CAT scores and called for Group Discussions (GDs) and personal interviews (PIs). From this year (for the 2010 batch) MDI has introduced a common application form for the PGPM, PGHR and PGIM programmes.
S. P. Jain Institute of Management and Research (SPJIMR), Mumbai
SPJIMR is rated among the top 10 B-schools in the country. Inaugurated in 1981 by the then British Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, SPJIMR is an auto-nomous institute, not affiliated to any university. It was ranked the seventh best MBA school in South Asia in a survey by the Singapore-based Asia Inc. (August 2003).
Main programme: Post Graduate Diploma in Manage-ment (PGDM), a two-year, full time, residential programme.
Admission procedure: Aspirants can apply only online. The test scores accepted are CAT 2009 or XAT 2010 or GMAT (taken in 2009). The minimum score that was required to get the final offer was 85 percentile in CAT 2009/XAT 2009 or a score of 680 in GMAT taken in 2009. Successful candidates are thereafter called for PIs.
Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, Mumbai
Established in 1977, the Welingkar Institute of Management Development & Research, Mumbai is one of India’s premier B-schools. Affiliated to the University of Mumbai and recognised by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), Welingkar was the first ISO 9001:2000 certified ‘A’ grade management institute in the country.
Main programme: Post Graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM).
Admission procedure: The selection process comprises of a written test and candidates are judged on their academic performance, work experience. Students short-listed from stage one (above) will progress to being judged on extra curricular activities, essay questions, GD, two PIs, a psychometric and a creativity test. The aspirant should have taken CAT conducted by the IIMs for the year specified in the admissions advertisement and/or MH-CET (2010) and/or ATMA (2010) and/or XAT (2010).
Great Lakes Institute of Management, Chennai
Great Lakes has come a long way since its inception in 2004. Within this short span of time, it has emerged as one of India’s leading B-schools. It has a world class faculty from the top International B-Schools such as Kellogg, Stanford, Harvard, Chicago, Columbia, Yale, among many others.
Main programme: Post Graduate Programme in Management (PGPM), a one year compulsory residential course.
Admission procedure: Appli-cants for admission are evaluated based on GMAT/CAT (2008 and 2009) scores, past academic performance, essays and letters of recommendation, and performance in the interview and group discussion. Letters of recommendation are required to be submitted online along with the application. Recommendations should be from professionals and superiors with substantial work experience.
International Management Institute (IMI), New Delhi
IMI is India’s first corporate-sponsored B-school. With a vision to be world-class and achieving excellence in management education and research through continuous competency building, IMI’s two year full time and three year part time PG programmes are accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA) and the AICTE. Established in 1981, as an autonomous non-profit educational society, the institute holds a place of distinction among the premier schools of management.
Main Programme: Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM)
Admission procedure: Candi-dates are required to appear for the CAT as IMI uses CAT scores (sectional and overall) as the sole criterion for short-listing candidates. Foreign students and NRI sponsored candidates have to take the Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) at a test centre outside India. GDs and PIs are integral components of the admission process. The final selection is based on an evaluation of the applicant’s academic record, work experience (if any), GD and PI.
