The Union Health Ministry has permitted the Puducherry government to start an Ayurveda Medical College at Mahe, an enclave of Puducherry in Kerala.
A letter of permission has been received from the Centre in this regard, Home and Health Minister E.Valsaraj said in a release today.
The college sponsored by the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Medical College Society, which is already running the first State government sponsored Indira Gandhi Medical college and Research Institute in Puducherry, has been named a`Rajiv Gandhi Ayurveda Medical College.
Valsaraj said the Centre had released Rs 6 crores for the establishment of the Ayurveda college. The college would offer a five and half year course and fifty students would be would be selected through the Centralised Admission Committee.
The college will commence the course during this academic year (2010-2011).
A portion of the Mahatma Gandhi Government Arts college in Mahe has been taken over for running the new college and a 100 bed hospital had also been accommodated in a three storied building.
