Teacher scam

The high and mighty in the Jalpaiguri CPM had egg on their faces after the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee government, in a recent order, asked all of their relatives selected as teachers in primary schools in the district not to join duty till further orders.

The appointments, which led to a furore in the district, include those of CPM district secretary Manik Sanyal’s daughter-in-law Soma Majumdar, CPM district secretariat member Badal Guha’s son Apratim Guha, ABTA district secretary Biresh Sikdar’s relative Trina Shome, school council chairman Mrinal Paul’s wife Anita Das, Santosh Jha, Punam Jha and Pawan Jha — all relatives of ABTA zonal secretary Krishna Kumar Jha, and many others.

The school education department, in a recent directive to primary schools in the district, asked them not to allow 15 such newly appointed teachers to join duty. In a letter faxed to the secretary of the district primary school council on Monday, the deputy secretary of the department asked the schools concerned to ensure that they don’t come to school even if they have been issued appointment letters. “And in case they have already joined their respective schools, their services are to be kept suspended with immediate effect till further order,” the letter reads.

The department has also set up an experts’ panel to examine the answerscripts of the suspended candidates, as there have been allegations of gross irregularities in the selection process.
