'ASSOCHAM: Relax norms for ad-hoc teachers in central varsities

The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) has appealed to the UGC to relax its conditions in appointing ad-hoc teachers in central universities to fill the large number of posts lying vacant for want of suitable candidates.

ASSOCHAM said an estimated 400 posts of lecturers were lying vacant in institutions like DU, JNU and Jamia Milia Islamia, for want of candidates with a PhD degree along with NET qualification.

In a representation to the University Grants Commission, the ASSOCHAM Committee on Higher Education asked it to shed its insistence on having a PhD qualification and NET (National Eligibility Test) exam passed for appointment of ad-hoc lecturers in central universities like DU, Jamia and JNU.

"Students in these campuses have been suffering as in the absence of lecturers, classes are not being held as required, leading to disenchantment and dissatisfaction among large number of students," it said.

It said that in appointment of ad-hoc lecturers on short-term basis, a degree of M.Phil with good academic record was good enough criteria. This criteria were followed until the academic session of 2009-10.

The chamber's Secretary General, D S Rawat said in the absence of competent and qualified degree holders, "the backlog continues to grow fatter if relaxation is not observed for appointment of ad-hoc lecturers in central universities like that of DU and JNU".

The insistence on PhD for ad-hoc appointments from this session has led to a large number of shortages being reported in central universities.
