Students admitted to govt medical college exempted from fees

The newly inaugurated medical college at Puducherry has exempted students of the first MBBS course (2010-2011) from payment of tuition fees.

Only last week, the Medical Council of India had granted approval for the Perunthalaivar Kamarajar Medical College Society.

Home and Health Minister of Puducherry E.Valsaraj, who is the chairman of the society, said the Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Research Institute launched by the state government at a cost of around Rs 200 crores at Kadirkamam near here will have a total intake of 150 students in the first MBBS.

There was a proposal to earmark 15 percent of these seats for Non Resident Indian students. The remaining seats would be filled through counselling by Centralised Admission Committee (CENTAC). These candidates would be exempt from the payment of tuition fees although they have to pay refundable deposits at the time of admission.

Counselling for selection of students for biology based courses would be held from tomorrow.

Valsaraj said the Centre had also approved the proposal to start an Ayurveda Medical College in Mahe,an enclave of Puducherry in Kerala, during this academic year (2010-11). This college would function for the time being on part of premises of the Government Arts college in Mahe.

The Women and Child Hospital (maternity hospital) with full-fledged high tech facilities would be opened shortly.
