Art education for upper primary teachers

All teachers of classes VI, VII and VIII of Chennai Schools and those of government and government aided schools in the city have started to undergo training in artificial jewellery making from this academic year.

The training forms a component of art education for the upper primary class teachers as part of the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) programme.

A training programme in jewellery-making for 1,658 teachers was organised by SSA here recently.

The teachers would have to teach the art to students of class VI, VII and VIII.

“This training is part of making the students learn socially useful work which is productive,” said Britto Felicious, one of the coordinators of the programme.
Four classes

“The students will have four classes of the training session per month,” said S.Usha, a teacher of a school in Chintadripet.

“The training is expected to make the student more creative. It will be an interesting activity,” said D.B.Kanchana, headmistress of a government-aided school.

“The students who are taught such arts gain understanding of how to design products innovatively. The marketing of the products would also be arranged by the school.

“The entrepreneurship spirit and self confidence among students would also increase by imparting such training,” said M.Manjula, another teacher who participated in the training in Chennai.
