UP to set up 229 ITIs in backward blocks

In a bid to provide technical education in backward blocks of Uttar Pradesh, the state government has sent a proposal to the Centre to open 229 Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs), officials said here today.

"The state's technical education department has sent a proposal in this regard to the Union Human Resource Development ministry last week. We are waiting for a response from the Centre," an official spokesman said.

Uttar Pradesh, having a population of over 19 crore has 820 blocks, of these 476 are underdeveloped, he said.

The state government has identified 229 of these blocks where it proposes to set up new ITIs in collaboration with the HRD ministry.

The decision to set up new ITIs was taken under the government scheme to provide technical and vocational training to youth across the length and breadth of the state, he said.

Besides ITIs, the government would set up skill development centres (SDCs) in blocks to impart vocational training to educated youth.

"Under the new scheme each block will have two skill development centres, while there will be one ITI for two blocks. As the state does not have enough money to set up ITIs on its own, it has sought the help of the Union HRD ministry in this regard," the spokesman added.
