TN to get 48 new polytechnics

Chennai: Among 116 applicants to start Polytechnic colleges, the Directorate of Technical Education ( DOTE) have given nod to 48 seekers.

As many as 116 trusts / societies applied to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the state directorate of technical education (DOTE) seeking permission to start new polytechnics in Tamil Nadu.

According to official sources, DOTE has cleared 48 applicants till date after checking various documents of the societies and the infrastructure.

'Before the end of June all formalities will be completed and new polytechnics will be given the go ahead to start their admission for the current academic year,' the sources said.

It is hopeful that half of the applicant would get approval to start admissions this academic year .

Presently, Tamil Nadu has 247 private polytechnics and with the addition of another 50 the number of private polytechnics would go up to 297 with over 1.2 lakh seats.

According to the directorate,  116 trusts / societies had applied for starting polytechnic colleges and one trust submitted an application for starting college for hotel management.

As per the DOTE norms, it is mandatory for the societies / trusts to possess a minimum of five acres of land. After being satisfied after the inspection of the land, the inspection committee of the Directorate will ask the trust to construct buildings.

Apart from recruiting adequate faculty, the societies have to show DOTE that they have put up 75 per cent of infrastructure in place.

After completion of these basic formalities the state government will issue a no objection certificate to the trust and forward the application file to AICTE for approval.

'The trust can start admitting students, after getting approval from the council,' the source said.
