Ultra high speed camera installed at IIT-Kanpur to do with drugs

Kanpur: A high speed camera, which can take 20 crore photos in a second and will facilitate students in their research, has been installed at the Mechanical Engineering department of IIT Kanpur.

'The ultra high speed camera installed in the High Speed Experimental Mechanics laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering department is the first of its kind in any technological institute in India,' Director of IIT Kanpur Prof Sanjay Govind Dhande said.

The camera costs around Rs two crores and has been set up with the help of Science and Technology division of the Indian government, Dhande said adding it will facilitate the students in their research work and help in improve the quality of research done in the institute.

According to Dhande, automobile manufacturing companies test the design of their vehicles using a high speed camera.

They collide the experimental model of the vehicle with a hard object at a high speed. The whole process of collision is captured with a high speed camera. The impact of the collision on the model is studied to understand the process.

'This camera will play a crucial role in examining the design of vehicles which run at a high speed cutting through air,' Dhande said.

The camera, completely computerised, has been imported from London and is expected to help the students of the Mechanical Engineering in research work.
