Germany calling

The cultural capital of India will be gripped by an array of German social and cultural events between the months of August and September, held by Goethe Institut at the Max Mueller Bhavan. 

 

It will kick off on August 16 by bidding adieu to the 16 mm projector camera and will showcase five classic German movies between 1955 and 1974.

 

On September 12, Dr Christiane Lange director of Zebra Poetry Film Festival will introduce and present prize winning poetry films. Poetry films are a new genre of short films which focus on the content, aesthetics and forms of poems.  It will be followed by a round table conference on the following day, where contemporary film makers and poets will be present to throw some light on this new genre. 

 

Between September 25 and October 7, the Indian Council for Cultural Relations would play host to an exhibition by ULM school of Design of their archival work done on the “ULM model” between 1953 -68 and discuss its effects on modern architecture. In relation to this exibition a workshop on “design education in India” will be conducted on September 28 by the National Institute of Design.

 

According to Dr Reimar Volker, director of the Goethe Institut, "There will be discussions on how the ULM model has inspired the construction in Kolkata.” 

 

If you have ever wondered how the climate and the cultural change is occurring world wide then between October 25-28 at 6.30 pm a set of nine documentary films would be played focusing on these issues. 

 

For people who like larger than life movies there would a special treat awaiting them, between September 1-4, four movies by famous German director Werner Herzog will be screened. Herzog hero’s often portrayed trying to achieve impossible dreams and have unique talents. 

 

On September 8, Martin Kampchen will launch the book My Dear Master, the book is based on the life and works of Rabindranath Tagore. 

 

Max Muller Bhavan has recently updated its library adding new collection of books in the literature and philosophy section and on September 3, Dr Llaus U Werner the current chief librarian of Berlin’s free university will speak on “The library of the future”. 

 

The institute will be starting a German language course for beginners from August 30 where people interested can come and enroll.
