An eye for an eye

Want to apply for a PG course in Therapeutic Prescribing for Optometrists? Then the Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU), Scotland has something just up your street. The new course will allow opticians to prescribe for eye conditions such as glaucoma that previously had to be referred to eye hospitals. The postgraduate Therapeutic Prescribing for Optometrists course is designed to enable qualified opticians to prescribe independent of a medical practitioner.

“Glasgow Caledonian was the first university in the UK to offer such a programme,” says Course Organiser Dr. Gunter Loffler, “implementing recent legislative changes which recommend that general prescribing should be extended to certain non-medical professions including optomet-rists. The aim is to make better use of the skills of health professionals and in turn to provide patients with quicker access to treatment.”

Donald Cameron, Optometry Programme Director for NES comments, “NES is pleased to support the development of optometry by funding this high quality series of courses by GCU and we look forward to seeing these skills being used in community practice…”

Applications for the 2011 postgraduate course in Therapeutic Prescribing for Optometrists are now being accepted.
