Fisheries schools in State to be revamped

Fisheries Minister S. Sarma said on Monday that the government has initiated steps to implement the Rs. 10 crore package for revamping 10 fisheries and technical schools in the State.

In his address on the occasion of the distribution of educational and sports awards instituted by the State Fishermen Welfare Board here, he said that the assistance is part of the total Rs. 38 crore allotted to the Fisheries department under the Rural Infrastructure Development Fund.

The Minister said that the fund will be used for renovating the 10 technical and fisheries schools in the State. He said that the government will also consider stepping up the daily food allowance for students in fisheries and technical schools. Mr. Sarma said that he will discuss the issue with Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac and take necessary steps to hike the assistance.

He said that the government has also decided to provide fee concession (similar to the fee fixed for SC/ST students) for children of fishermen who get admission in professional courses in the State.

The Minister said that the government has also provided rice at Rs. 2 a kg for the fishermen community besides deciding to write off their debts.

Dominic Presentation, MLA, presided over the meeting. Pulluvila Stanley, chairman of Matsya Board, C. K. Gopalan, Kochi Corporation councillor, K. A. Sairabanu, Fisheries Joint Director (central zone), and K. Anitha, Commissioner of Matsya Board, spoke.

Nearly 50 students from Kottayam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad won educational awards on the occasion.
