Chief Minister of Kerala, V.S. Achuthanandan recently laid down the foundation stone of the proposed Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University at Pookode (Wayanad) on Monday.
The CM addressed the gathering at the Veterinary College Auditorium after laying down the foundation stone and said that the proposed university will have a major role to play in deciding the economy, employment sectors and food security for the state of Kerala.
The Minister of Agriculture Mullakkara Ratnakaran was the chief guest whereas Minister for Animal Husbandry, C. Divakaran presided over the occasion.
The aim with which the veterinary university is being set up in the state is to boost cattle wealth, help in curbing various diseases that affect cattle and to become self-sufficient in the production of products such as egg, milk and meat.
Speaking at the occasion, Achuthanandan said that the research related to animal science and husbandry should be synchronous with the developments in the field that are going on all over the world.
Talking about the veterinary university, he said, "The Kerala Veterinary and Animal Science University will benefit not only students who wish to study in this field or teachers and researchers alone. It would be of immense benefit to dairy farmers too as students, faculty and researchers at the university are obliged to the farming community. The main purpose of the university will be to benefit the farming community."
The minister also informed that the setting up of the university was coming at a time when several schemes for development had been implemented by the government in the farming as well as dairy sectors of the state.
Achuthanandan also informed that a medical university had been set up in Thrissur by the government a few weeks ago and now it was planning to set up another university for studying Fisheries, with a purpose to comprehensively develop the fisheries sector.
