The University of Madras in association with Tata Consultancy Services organised a job fair for the last two batch graduates from its affiliated colleges here on Saturday. The university has been conducting such programmes every month since May.
Madras University Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said qualifications alone would not fetch the best jobs, and the colleges had to make appropriate changes in their curriculums and knowledge delivery systems to motivate students to think innovatively. “It's our top priority to see that students leave the campus not just with degrees, but jobs too,†he said.
Hundreds of aspirants participated in the recruitment programme. TCS planned to recruit 300 candidates for various Business Process Outsourcing job openings in Chennai, Bangalore and a few other places, he said. Talking about the recently launched academic-interface programme to make the students employable in terms of skills, Dr. Thiruvasagam said professionals from recruiting companies would impart training to placement committees in the colleges, which would, in turn, prepare the students for the recruitment process.
On the major consolidated changes that had occurred in the outsourcing field, TCS-BPO Head (Operations) N. Venkataraman said the outsourcing industry had matured and expanded in terms of its operations and requirements in the past 10 years. Madras University Student Advisory Board director Raja Hussain said a coaching centre of the University for the Civil Services Examination would start functioning soon
