There is no valid reason on the part of the Centre to deny Kerala an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) since the state is in the forefront of education, Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan has said.
He was speaking after inaugurating the new building of the Government Engineering College, Sreekrishnapuram, and performing the state-level inauguration of the Smart Classroom Project here on Sunday.
The Chief Minister said that the Centre was yet to accept the demand of the state for sanctioning an IIT.
“Currently, the state is depending on the IITs in other states to know about the strength of our dams and to know about the technicalities involved in the projects sanctioned under the Kuttanad package. The students of our engineering colleges can help the government in such projects,†the Chief Minister said.
The Chief Minister asked the students why they could not come up with a road tarring pattern which could withstand the monsoon.
The study and research being conducted in the science and technology sector is the backbone of the development of an economy. Studies have shown that investments made in research in the engineering sector in the last decade will give great dividends in the future.
If Kerala has to benefit from it, the engineering colleges in the state should be made into centres of excellence,†V S Achuthanandan said. K S Saleekha MLA presided over the meet.
The academic wing of the college was inaugurated by Education Minister M A Baby and the library building by Local Administration Minister Paloli Mohammed Kutty. The Edusat scheme was inaugurated by Deputy Speaker Jose baby.
M B Rajesh MP gave away awards to the rank holders. Technical Education Department director Kunjaria P Isaac welcomed the gathering and college principal Susan Abe proposed a vote of thanks.
