Calcutta International School organised Enterprise 2010, an interschool business meet on the school premises on July 26.
The programme was organised by students of class XI and XII from various schools. It gave a view on the scope of business studies at a +2 level and encouraged business as a career in future .It put forth the diverse career opportunities in India and abroad.
The panelists consisted of Dr Sujata Sen chief guest, east India director of the British Council, William Rowland, chief, consular section, US Consulate, Kolkata, Nimit Shah, Consulate of Netherlands, Prof Dr Surendra Munshi, retired IIM C faculty and Vipul Duggar, entrepreneur and former CIS student.
Vipul Duggar moderated the programme. He spoke about India being very attractive for business purpose but stated that China was the next economic superpower and this was all linked with the study of business or commerce.
Dr Sen started off with the real life stories of Jimmy Choo shoes as a brand and how Innocent smoothies were perceived. Sen went on to say that an entrepreneurial streak was present in students from all streams of study but explained that in business students needed to be aware of teamwork, leadership and that they needed to be socially aware/
Dr Munshi spoke about the advantage India has from its various cultures, languages and flexibility. He advised students to “never make a mistake for looking for a job but plan a career”.
Rowland spoke about the various opportunities of application of business and the different education system in the US, the varied options of study, value added opportunities in schools there. He spoke about the way of choosing universities while planning to study abroad and asked students to go through the USIEF(United States India Educational Foundation) website to find out more about the courses offered, curriculum, fees structure about US schools ,colleges ,and universities.
Shah, the final speaker at the session, gave an insight about how India emerged in the global economy after being isolated from it for 25 years, he said studying business in school does not only mean one has to be a CA or CS.
The discussion was followed by interactive sessions and different competitions for the children. The prizes were given away to the winner by the principal of the senior school, Kaveri Dutt.
