Around 26 schools took part in Crescendo, an inter-school music competition, which was recently organised by the Calcutta School of Music and sponsored by Fiama-di-Wills. The preliminaries had already been held from July 19-22.
Five participants were selected for the finals in the categories of piano, violin, guitar, band and choir.
Chaitali Ganguly, academic head, dept. of western music and performing arts said: “We would like to not only promote musical excellence but also contemporize the face of Western classical music through Crescendo.”
The evening flowed seamlessly with the evocative harmonious chords and strings, culminating finally into striking performances of the different school choirs and bands.
Encompassing a wide range of legendary composers like Mozart, Vivaldi, Bach and Carl Bohm, the finalists had indeed attempted a tough challenge with sheer conviction, talent, determination, and zeal.
The visually appealing climax of the show blossomed with the curtains gently rising to reveal the show-stopper of the evening - the all-girl band of Modern High School.
An ever-confident and fun attitude matched their lively rendering of the song “Burning Love”. Blending the running notes of the guitar and the loud rhythmic beats of the drum, they stole both the audience’s and judge’s hearts to win, without an iota of doubt, the first prize in the band section
The second prize was bagged by the St Xavier’s School band who performed equally well with a vigorous heart-pounding energy on the song “Vertigo”, while the third prize was awarded to the all instrumental band of Dolna Day School.
Amit Chaudhuri, one of the judges, remarked, “It was great to see bands perform. I really applaud the humorousness and energy of the all-girl band. St.Xaviers also performed energetically while Dolna Day’s performance was indeed beautiful”.
Dolna Day School also emerged as the winner of the “School Choir” category.
In the category of Piano for the Senior section, the bumper 1st prize went to Pritika Malhotra, (Modern High School), earning her the coveted opportunity for a trip to Poland to further her musical skills.
Ganguly was delighted that Calcutta School of Music had lent a rare chance to all the first prize winners to participate in the monsoon concert to be held in August this year, the performances of which would be recorded into a CD! The noteworthy judges Anjum Katyal, Matthias Emmerling, Amit Chaudhuri, Dr. Anita Mehta and Wejsis Malgorzate also stressed on the importance of technique and feel in music and were pleased with the different variety of performances.
The first prize for the piano section in the Junior category was carried off by Caleb Chen from South City International School. Among the juniors in the violin category, Prayash Biswakarma (Dr Graham’s Home) emerged as the winner while Sangeeta Majumdar (La Martiniere for Girls) won the Senior category award. Adwaita Chatterjee (Lakshmipat Singhania School) and Sohini Dey (Meghmala Roy Education) bagged the junior and senior awards in the guitar category respectively.
