Former President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam urged spiritual and religious leaders to contribute to the education sector in the country.
He was speaking after inaugurating the building of J S S Public School here on Thursday.
He praised J S S Maha Vidyapeetha for its contribution to education. He said such religious institutions should devote time and knowledge to bring about inclusive education in the country. He said this will not only develop the country but will also lead to world peace.
Kalam said children should inculcate the habit of reading books and parents should encourage them by starting a library in home. “Reading books one hour a day will transform one to scholar. Home library is the greatest wealth that parents can leave for their next generation,†he said.
Kalam stressed on planting more saplings. He made children take oath to plant 10 plants and ensure their growth. He said India’s population has exceeding one billion and by 2015, there should be at least one billion trees in the country.
Dr Shivakumara Mahaswamiji of Siddaganga Math, Shivarathri Deshikendra Mahaswamiji of Suttur Math, Governor of Tripura Dr D Y Patil, Transport Minister R Ashok, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Vishveshwara Hegde Kageri and Mayor S K Nataraj were present.
