Here is a chance for young scientists raring to showcase their innovations. ‘Science Utsav 2010' provides them the much-needed platform.
Portraits of Sir Thomas Alva Edison, Marie Curie and James Watt greet visitors at the science expo organised by the Velammal Group of Schools on its campus here with the theme ‘Science and Technology for Society.'
The five-day national level exhibition began on Wednesday.
“Science and Technology requires out-of-the-box thinking. Any innovation in science can happen only out of lateral thinking. The future of India depends only on advancements in science,” said T.R. Chidambaram, Director (Inertial Systems), Indian Space Research Organisation, Thiruvananthapuram.
‘Velammal's Science Utsav 2010' is focussing both on concept and application of science so that the students could begin looking at the subject from a new dimension and present their ideas from a young age.
Virtually every field of science – biology, physics, biotechnology, space technology, power, nanotechnology and so on – has a stall at the exhibition, being organised from July 28 to August 1 in association with the Tamil Nadu Science and Technology Centre, Chennai, with TheHindu as media partner.
Appreciating the youngsters who have come from various places including Bangalore, Hyderabad and Chennai, chairman of the Velammal Educational Trust, M.V. Muthuramalingam, said that it was will power that mattered for success, especially in the field of science.
“The Velammal Group, which is celebrating its silver jubilee year, is spending Rs.40 lakh for organising this national-level exhibition. It is only to kindle interest in science among the younger generation,” Mr. Muthuramalingam said.
Of the 500 projects, exhibits and models received from schools/colleges across the country, 200 were selected for the exhibition.
S. Vasuki, coordinator, National Science Utsav-2010, said that the five-day expo would provide the participants and visitors an environment of joy of learning.
Seeing the huge magnitude of efforts put in by the Velammal Group for the event, Dr. Chidambaram, recalled the strong foundation laid by the country's first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru for laying a strong base in science and technology to meet India's challenges.
V. Radhakrishnan, Inspector of Matriculation Schools, Madurai, and N. Suresh Kumar, principal, Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, were among those who spoke.
