The educational council of Bangalore University has agreed to offer quota to transgenders for admission to post-graduation courses. Under this policy a seat will be reserved for transgenders in every post-graduate department of the university. The reserved seats are non-transferable.
From now onwards application forms for admission to post graduation courses will bear the 'Others' category in the gender section. The council is of the opinion that transgenders should get equal treatment like general students and they must get opportunity to pursue higher education.
It has also been decided that if the students of this group are subjected towards any kind of mental or physical torture by another students, then it will be considered as ragging and severe actions will be taken against those found guilty.
Measures are being taken to implement this proposal even for the undergraduate courses. The council said that since this task is beyond their authority, it will appeal to the state government for introducing quotas for transgenders for admission to undergraduate programmes.
