Updated on: Thursday, May 14, 2009

The Goa Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (GBSHSE) has appointed a reviewer to review the standard seventh NCERT history textbook which has come under severe criticism from parents and teachers over the last few months for lack of state and country specific content.

Official sources said that a report is expected within a week's time.

The standard seventh textbook of the National Council for Educational Research and Training (NCERT) was also criticised by the Hindu Jan Jagruti samiti for glorifying foreign history' while not giving Indian history due significance. Parents and teachers had objected to the NCERT history textbook stating that the content was difficult for students to grasp as irrevelant parts of foreign history have been included.

Sources said that the Goa board is looking at deleting the objectionable' content and assimilating more of the Indian and Goan history.

Meanwhile, the Goa board has taken the decision to use the Sparsh' textbook for Hindi for standard tenth from the coming academic year 2009-10 which was withdrawn last year after objections from parents that students found the language very tough' in certain chapters. Officials said that the content which came under criticism has been deleted after review.

On the other hand, the tenth standard NCERT history and civics textbook, which was withdrawn last year along with the Hindi textbook, is still under scrutiny of the NCERT officials. As a result, this year too the Maharashtra State Board history and civics textbook will be used for standard tenth.

An expert committee under the chairmanship of Remy Dias of the Government College of Quepem was constituted to prepare a standard tenth history book fully incorporating NCERT syllabus alongwith local components for the academic year 2009-10.

The NCERT standard tenth history and civics and Hindi textbooks were withdrawn through a decision of the executive council of the board in its meeting on June 24, 2008. The then Goa board chairman had said that the history textbook "has over two dozen mistakes." The Marathi version of the history textbook was also withdrawn.
