10 new IIITs, 20 NITs by 2012 - 7/26/2010

In an encouraging news for the education sector, the government plans to open 10 new Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and 20 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) by 2012. The government also plans to open as many as 374 colleges for the benefit of students of backward areas.
These ambitious projects would become a reality under the 11th Five-Year Plan (2007-12), according to University Grants Commission (UGC) vice-chairman Prof Ved Prakash.

He was in Varanasi to participate in the East Zone Vice Chancellors' Conference at the Mahatma Gandhi Kashi Vidyapeeth on Friday.

He said UGC has also made provision of Rs 650 crore for upgrading the level of various colleges. Prakash said education leaders should be visionary, because without vision higher educational institutes could not develop.

He said a vice-chancellor of any university should not restrict himself to just academics, but should be well aware of the ground realities of his varsity.

He expressed concern over the improper use of resources in educational institutions. He said state governments should make efforts to increase resources of universities.
