Knowledge panel satisfied with progress

From setting up 15 central universities across the country to ensuring the right to education, the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) feels that the Union government has been committed to implementing its recommendations.

In a follow-up report on the steps being taken by the government, NKC observes that the action taken includes the setting up of 14 new universities and 15 new central universities, adhering to global standards. The aim is to enhance capacity and to improve the quality of higher education in the country.

The NKC report said that the government is in the process of setting up eight Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), 10 National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and 20 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) as far as possible in the Public-Private Partnership mode. Steps have been also taken to set up three Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISERs), seven Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) and two Schools of Planning and Architecture (SPA).
