Conference on Security and Identity Management begins

Ahmedabad: A two-day international conference on 'Security and Identity Management' (SIM) began today at the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A) to identify globa challanges on the issue and address gaps which exists in the digital economy.

'This conference focuses on the burgeoning digital economy is aimed promoting the importance of digital identity and information security solutions both in India and UK,' the conference Chairperson and IIM-A faculty Dr Rajanish Dass told mediapersons here.

'Several security and identity challenges across the globe will be presented during the confernece by various international participants from diverse feilds. Efforts will also be made to address the 'gap' in the digital economy market and develop appropriate security and identity framework and solutions,' Dass said.

The event is part of an Indo-UK research project in the area of information security and identity management, which will bring together several international experts from both academia and industry to delibrate on the issue.

According to Dr Muttukrishnan Rajarajan, coordinator for the Identity project in UK, there are nearly 47 partners from Indian and 25 from the UK in the research project.

'At the end of the conferece we plan to form ten working groups having partners from both UK and India who will identify challenges across as many sectors in managing digital identities and help design a policy framework,' Rajarajan said.
Chitagunta Ramnath, CGM (IT), State Bank of India, one of the presenter at the conference said that managing digital identities is a major issue of the banking sector.

'With the passage of time the number of accounts in SBI has grown to nearly 170 million and number of transactions have reached 30 million per day,' Ramnath who played a vital role in introducing core banking in SBI and spreading the ATM network of the bank across the country.

With development in technology, increase in number of users, there is also rise in diversity and complexities of services. Therefore, security issues do impact our banking operations,he said. 'There is a technological as well as managerial challange in the banking sector. It is more a managerial challange where the technology needs to be managed properly, Ramnath added.

He said that banks need to work towards better secutiry and identity management, introduce authenticity and confidentiality to gain trust of the customers.

The conference is expected to bring together diverse community from the academia, research, industry and government to deliberate on the identity management issues.
