M Karunanidhi today said his government would make sincere efforts to ensure that quality education reaches the poor.
Declaring open a new block constructed in his name at a cost of Rs 3.20 crore at the historic Queen Mary's College here, he said if a detailed list was made available to him on the facilities required, the state government would not hesitate to spend for it.
Stating that the DMK government was following the footsteps of late Chief Minister K Kamaraj to ensure that quality education reaches the poor and the downtrodden, Mr Karunanidhi said more colleges were created during the DMK regime.
''We have been devoting more attention to improve the quality of education in all aspects'', he said.
Lauding the efforts of Kamaraj, who was instrumental in providing access to education to the poor in rural areas and introduced the noon meal scheme in schools, he said it was the DMK governemnt which had announced Kamarajar's birthday as 'Education Development Day' and had been celebrating it in a be fitting manner every year.
Turning towards a political issue, Mr Karunanidhi recalled the arrest of DMK leaders M K Stalin and Mr Ponmudy when they supported the agitation against the previous AIADMK government, which tried to demolish the college campus to pave way for construction of a new Assembly complex.
''After coming to know that there is some problem in the Queen Mary's College, I deputed Mr Stalin and Mr Ponmudy to find out what it is. When they visited the college, the students were in a state of shock and fear. But they bravely resisted the then AIADMK government's move to demolish the college'', he said.
''But Mr Stalin and Mr Ponmudy were arrested and sent to jail'', Mr Karunanidhi recalled, adding, it was not good for a government to act tough on all occasions
