Taking forward HRD minister Kapil Sibal's drive to involve private sector in education, CBSE on Monday signed MoUs with filmmaker Subhash Ghai's Whistling Woods International to teach film and media studies and with Rolta India for geospatial technologies.
Both the courses will be taught at Class XI and XII level. Right now, only a handful of schools have introduced these courses. GT course has been introduced in 19 schools while mass media has been started in 14 schools. On Tuesday, CBSE will sign another MoU with tourism ministry to introduce course on tourism in Class XI-XII. All courses can either be taken as a vocational subject or as an academic subject. The financial implication of the arrangement is not known.
The GT vocational course has been launched keeping in mind the growth expected in the Indian geospatial market. A market report estimates requirement of 30,000 professionals in the Indian geospatial industry by 2013. As part of the certification scheme, CBSE students will have to compulsorily pass two modules of GT in Class XI and XII. Rolta India Ltd has been nominated as the resource institution for the GT course and will provide assistance in various technical aspects, including teachers' training and availability of the software.
For the course in mass media, Ghai's Whistling Woods has prepared course material in five principal areas -- film, TV, print, radio and the internet.
