Tamil Nadu tech education council holds meeting

The newly-constituted Tamil Nadu State Council for Technical Education, formed to look into the aspects of introducing uniform system of examinations in all Engineering colleges in the State, held its first meeting at the Anna University here today.

Talking to reporters after chairing the meeting here, State Higher Education Minister K Ponmudy said the council was formed to improve the quality of technical education.

The council would also look into the aspects of introducing uniform system of examination in all engineering colleges and ensure that the results were announced simultaneously.

There were nearly 500 engineering colleges in Tamil Nadu alone and more than 1.5 lakh students pass out annually.

The council would see that the quality of engineering colleges was improved and also integrate the functioning of all five Anna Universities, Mr Ponmudy said.

On the sudden spurt in the number of students committing suicide, the Minister said 'counselling cells' would be set up in all the colleges to prevent such incidents.

The council would be responsible for coordination and determination of standards in college and scientific research in technical education.

It would also evolve plans for development of technical education and forward developmental programmes of technical universities and colleges to the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission (UGC).
