The All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) was set up in November 1945 as a national level Apex Advisory Body. Its purview covers programmes of technical education including training and research in Engin-eering, Technology, Architec-ture, Town Planning, Manage-ment, Pharmacy, Applied Arts and Crafts, Hotel Management and Catering Technology etc. at different levels. Students attending colleges/institutes not affiliated to the AICTE in the above fields will therefore not have recognised degrees.

Considering these facts it is important that every student checks the credentials of the institute/college he or she is joining. At the moment three engineering colleges will probably have to face severe action after an AICTE inspection was carried out at these institutions. These are the Arulmigu Meenakshi Amman College of Engineering, Oxford College of Engineering, both in Tiruvannamalai, and J A College of Engineering and Technology. They were reprimanded due to anomalies relating to infrastructure and faculty. J A College will not be allowed to continue five of its courses, the other two colleges will have to limit their intake to 30 students to each of the courses offered.
