Rita Toto has become the first woman graduate among the vanishing Toto tribe in Jalpaiguri. With a population of only 1,365, the Totos are considered to be one of the most endangered primitive tribes in the country.
The 22-year-old girl graduated in the arts stream from the Prasanna Deb Women’s College in Jalpaiguri under the North Bengal University and scored 617 in the pass course. She is the fourth from the tribe and the first woman to hold a degree. Her father, Sugrib, is a Group D employee in the Uttarbanga Kshetriya Grameen Bank and mother Urmila is a homemaker.
Rita now wants to complete her post-graduation and aims to be a school teacher. “That will be a real morale booster for the other Toto youths. The real pleasure will come if my story succeeds in inspiring others,” she said. (TNN)
