New colleges averse to BA, B.Sc. courses

The managements of some institutions that propose to open new degree colleges from 2010-11 seem to be more interested in “business”.

Thirteen of the 14 colleges that have been granted affiliation by Mangalore University this year have decided to offer only B.Com., BBM and BCA courses. One college has proposed to introduce a diploma course in animation and visual effects. But none of them plan to introduce any course in humanities (BA) or basic sciences (B.Sc.).
Government approval

After obtaining affiliation from the university, it is mandatory for these colleges to secure Government approval for opening the institutions.

K. Chinnappa Gowda, Registrar (Administration) of the university, told The Hindu that till Thursday, the Government had permitted managements of six colleges to open their institutions. They are: Milagres College, Sharada College, St. Joseph's College of Management Studies (all in Mangalore); B.B. Hegde College, Kundapur; Adarsha College, BC Road; and Carmel College, Modankaup, Bantwal. Vice-Chancellor T.C. Shivashankara Murthy said that the demand for courses fluctuates based on the market trend.
Demand

Now, the demand was more for courses that provide more job opportunities. This might affect courses in humanities and basic sciences to some extent, he said.

Y. Bhaskar Shetty, honorary president, Association of Degree College Principals of Mangalore University, said that the demand was more for B.Com. course this year. It was followed by BBM and BCA courses.
Intake

The Registrar said that the degree colleges had been allowed to increase the intake of students for B.Com. course by 10 per cent over and above the sanctioned intake this year.

A professor of humanities at a reputed college here said that there was a need to revamp the humanities courses to attract students.
