The Institute for Entrepreneurship and Career Development (IECD) has, since its launch six years ago, imparted training to more than 22,700 educated and uneducated youth, home makers, differently abled people, and senior citizens.
IECD offers certificate and diploma programmes in 158 streams. Last year, the institute trained over 10,000 people, most of them belonging to economically weaker sections . The Institute has carried out a noble task of identifying economically backward people and transforming them into human resource through the training , the Vice-Chancellor M. Ponnavaikko said on Friday at a function organised by the IECD to mark the commencement of its seventh year. The occasion also marked the inauguration of a free training programme in Desk Top Publishing for 28 deaf and dumb candidates, including seven students of Maharishi Vidya Mandir.
The model computer software developed by the university for skill-development of differently abled has been tested successfully at the institution run by the Holy Cross Service Society. Dr.Ponnavaikko released IECD Director K. Parthasarathy's book on the achievements of IECD titled ‘Social Uplift: An Innovative Model'.
Dr. Parthasarathy said that the Institute has been functioning throughout the year without a break. By organising job-fairs, the IECD was instrumental in getting nearly 8,500 candidates, including more than 3,800 girls, placed in various industries, he said.
Presiding over, the University Registrar T. Ramaswamy urged differently abled candidates to confidently utilise the opportunities provided by the IECD and develop employable skills.
