The Coimbatore-based Sardar Vallabhai Patel Institute of Textile Management is introducing, for the first time in the country, a five-year integrated postgraduate programme in technical textiles and business administration.
This follows the upgrading of the eight-year-old institution, which is under the Union Textile Ministry. Renamed Sardar Vallabhai Patel International School of Textiles and Management, it is also introducing a postgraduate diploma programme in retail management.
At a function here on Wednesday, a memorandum of understanding was also signed between the institution and the Indira Gandhi National Open University for conducting three new programmes — MBA in textile management, M.Phil and PhD — as well as several three-month and six-month certificate and diploma courses in industry related subjects through distance education.
Textiles Minister Dayanidhi Maran said the new programmes were aimed at improving the skills of employees and helping them get better job opportunities. “Now, even an eighth class-passed worker would be able to study during free time and earn certificates and diplomas that could open up better avenues.”
The institute, he said, was considering tie-ups with universities in Italy and the Czech Republic for exchange of researchers, faculty and students. It planned to set up a new academic block spread over 50,000 sq.ft and a state-of-the-art auditorium.
