There are many colleges in the Delhi University who have closed their admissions under the third cut-off list. Students have still been flocking around dean students’ welfare office in the hope that they might be able to secure a seat in one of the colleges.
These are the students who did not fill the OMR form in the first place or those who missed out on their admission during the first and the second cut-off list. There are also those who got admission in one college but have secured their choice of college and course only in the third cut-off list. There are some students whose percentage did not match up to the declared percentage of any of the colleges in DU. What are the options that are available for such students?
SK Vij, dean students’ welfare, DU, says, “We had been repeatedly asking students to exercise maximum choices of college and course in the OMR form. Students, under the general category, have not secured a seat in any of the college of their choice even in the third list have few options. Now they can only wait for the fourth list. However, very few colleges have a fourth list.”
According to Vij, if a student has failed to secure a seat in courses like BA, BCom, they can instead opt for College of Open Learning. “The degree offered as well as the course content is similar to what a regular college student gets from the regular colleges of the Delhi University. Instead of running after a regular college, a student can weigh his/her options according to their long-term career goal. And if COL offers that course, students can take admission there.” Since COL has a separate admission form, those who aspire to get into DU still have a chance despite not having filled the OMR form.
The other option for those who have not secured a seat even under the third list is to approach a college directly. Vij says that the chances that a student who has not secured a seat during the three cut-off lists, to get a regular college seat, are bleak. However, students have to do their own research and if there are seats available in a particular college, it is up to the college to give them admission. Colleges have their own methods to fill the vacant seats under the general category. Students can check in the daily newspapers as colleges do advertise about the seats that are vacant.
There are also students who have secured their seat in a college under the second cut-off and have submitted their original certificates. Later, when their name appears in the college and course of their choice under the third-cut off, there is a provision to get admission. Many students are not able to procure the original certificates from the previous college and by the time the college promises to return the certificates , the admissions in the college of their choice might be over. “In such cases they can write an application to the previous college. The college is obligated to return the original certificates within a stipulated time period. The fee is refunded after three months,” he says.
The university has a separate admission process for SC/ST candidates. If their names have appeared in the first cut-off list but they want to wait till the second or third cut-off list for the college or course of their choice, they have to cancel their admission in the previous college.
“If an SC/ST candidate does not cancel his or her admission, the candidate’s case is considered as ‘not interested’ and the seat is automatically allotted to another candidate in the next cut-off list. For those who have cancelled their admission, the university will hold a personal counselling session on July 13 and allot another seat.”
Those SC/ST candidates, who did not take admission under any of the lists and did not cancel the admission, will not be able to secure a seat. However, the university will hold a personal counselling session in the month of August and will display the seats on a projector. If your cut-off meets that list then you still have a chance to take admission,” he informs.
The OBC candidates who did not take admission under the first or the second cut-off list have the option to take admission under the general category if their percentage meets the cut-off requirement of the college.
