Raffles Millennium International, Asia- Pacific’s premier design college launched its new Kolkata campus on July 2, 2010.
Kolkata designers Agnimitra Paul and Pali Sachdev were present at the inauguration programme. The college will offer bachelor degrees and advanced diplomas in Fashion Design, Product Design, Graphic Design, Multimedia Design, Jewellery Design and Fashion Marketing.
Students are required to sit for an entrance test called RMAT, which will test the general knowledge and creative skills. The first RMAT will take place on July 8, 2010. There will be no discrimination on the basis of marks. The minimum educational qualification is 10+2. There are four intakes in a year- January, April, July and October.
As Harpreet Singh, Executive Director, Educomp Higher Education Ltd, said, “This college is all about creativity”. This is the first centre in the East. There are six centres and a seventh will be opening at Hyderabad in the third week of July.
The college will provide 100% placement. Students will first work under a fashion designer for two to three years after which they can become independent designers. The dachelor’s degree courses are for three years and are approved by the Department of Science and Technology, Australia. Sixty to 70% of the staff is International faculty members and 30-40% is Indian faculty members. Staff and students exchange programs are also going to be there.
Professor Steve Rawlinson, VP Academics said,” We will try to get students engaged with professionals right from the start, so that they can develop a portfolio of experiences”.
There will be life case studies with modern technologies so that there can be easy communication between staff and students internationally. Credits are transferable across 35 countries. This ensures that all students are trained at the same level.
Michael Ghin, Vice President, RMI said, “Students will be equipped with practical skills, life skills needed for them to be workplace ready”.
Currently there is no Masters course, but Raffles is planning to start one at the Delhi centre next year. If a student has completed the Bachelor’s course, he can be transferred to a college abroad to do a Masters course. Raffles is also planning to launch part time courses in Interior Designing and Multimedia Designing, mainly for working people.
Students who are really interested in joining the institute and have not yet taken admission, can attend 3- 4 classes to see how the students are taught.
