No varsity nod for self-financing course

Following complaints, the University of Madras has decided not to grant permission to A.M. Jain College to offer B.Com. (Accounting and Finance) programme under the self-financing stream, Vice-Chancellor G. Thiruvasagam said on Friday.

During the admission process, complaints were raised that some government-aided colleges were forcing students to join the self-financing courses claiming that seats in aided courses had been filled. While aided courses charge nominal fees, colleges charge more for self-financing courses.

“When there is a vacancy in the aided stream, why are they trying to fill up the self-financing stream? This is not fair. There were complaints from various sections,” Dr. Thiruvasagam said.

“We appointed a three-member committee and found that only half of the seats in the regular aided courses were filled up in B.Com. So we have decided not to give permission to start a self-financing section this year. If the college continues this next year, no self-financing programme will be allowed from 2011-12,” the Vice-Chancellor said.

He added that there were similar complaints against other colleges and the university would take action against any others found to be indulging in such practices.
