346 students booked for forgery in Uttar Pradesh

As many as 346 students of Uttar Pradesh's Allahabad University have been booked for using fake documents to avail a fee-refund scheme meant for poor scholars, police said Friday.

The students submitted fake income certificates and other documents to avail the 'Shulk Pratipoorti Yojna', the scheme of the state government under which scholars whose parents' income is less than Rs.1 lakh per year can claim refund of university fees.

"We have registered cases of forgery against 346 students of Allahabad University on the directions of the varsity administration. The cases were registered late Thursday," police inspector R.K. Singh told reporters in Allahabad, about 200 km from Lucknow.

"Majority of students booked for submitting fake documents took admission in 2009. Officials of the state government's social welfare department and the varsity administration have initiated an extensive enquiry in the matter," he said.

The anomaly came to the fore during evaluation of documents undertaken by the varsity administration.
